Traveling With a Puppy: Helpful Tips for Your Adventures Together

traveling with a puppy, helpful tips

One of the sweetest parts of bringing home a puppy is realizing they quickly become part of everything you do! Including road trips, coffee runs (and pup cups!), vacations, and family adventures.

At Sappy Paws, we love raising puppies that are ready to take on the world right alongside their families. That’s one reason we intentionally expose our puppies to a variety of everyday experiences early on with the puppy culture approach -- including car rides, household sounds, outdoor play, handling, and gentle socialization.

Whether you’re driving across town or flying into Oregon to pick up your puppy, here are some helpful dos and don’ts to make travel smoother for both you and your new furry family member.

šŸš— Traveling With a Puppy by Car

Car rides are exciting and often new. Some puppies settle in immediately, while others need a little time and reassurance.

The good news? Most puppies become wonderful travelers with positive exposure and consistency.

DO: Use a Secure Travel Crate When Needed

One of the safest ways for a puppy to travel in the car is inside a secure crate, especially for longer drives or puppies who are still adjusting to being in the car.

A travel crate can:

  • Help puppies feel safe and contained

  • Prevent distracted driving

  • Keep puppies secure during sudden stops

That said, we also know real life with dogsĀ doesn’t always look perfectly textbook. Sometimes during shorter rides, our own puppies or dogs may ride comfortably on our lap while being supervised. Every puppy is different, and many families find a balance that works best for them over time.

Plan Potty & Water Breaks Carefully

Young puppies have tiny bladders, so regular potty breaks are important during longer trips home. However, until your puppy is fully vaccinated, it’s best to avoid heavily trafficked dog areas such as: Public dog parks, Pet rest stations used by many unknown dogs, Busy grassy areas near rest stops.

Instead, try to find quieter areas with minimal dog traffic whenever possible. Keeping your puppy separated from unfamiliar dogs during those early weeks helps protect their developing immune system.

Soft blankets and familiar smells can make a huge difference in helping puppies relax during travel!! At Sappy Paws, each puppy goes home with a thoughtful puppy care package that includes a blanket and stuffed toy to help comfort them during the transition home. Familiar scents from their litter and early environment often help puppies feel calmer and more secure while traveling.

āœˆļø Flying With a Puppy

Many of our puppy families travel from outside the area to pick up their puppy—and we’re always happy to help make the process smooth and stress-free.

We can often coordinate meeting families at:

  • Eugene Airport (EUG)

  • Portland International Airport (PDX)

for puppy pickup arrangements.

Airline Travel Tips for Puppies

If you’re flying home with your puppy:

  • Check your airline’s pet policies ahead of time

  • Confirm carrier size requirements

  • Use an airline-approved travel carrier

  • Bring absorbent puppy pads and wipes

  • Pack a comfort blanket or small toy

At Sappy Paws, we provide the puppy documentation that most airlines require for travel, including your puppy’s health and vaccination information. However, airline requirements can vary, so we always encourage families to double-check directly with their airline before flying.

We are always happy to help answer questions or assist with anything needed before your puppy’s flight home.

The Sappy Paws Difference

At Sappy Paws in Lebanon, Oregon, we believe early experiences shape confident dogs.

That’s why our puppies are raised with:

  • Daily handling and affection

  • Exposure to household activity

  • Early socialization

  • Outdoor exploration and play

  • Positive stimulation experiences

Our goal is to help each puppy transition smoothly into family life -- including travel, and all the little moments in between. Because life with a dog should feel joyful, and full of memories. Tamieka and her family were great! You can tell the dogs/puppies are well loved and healthy! The puppy I took home took to me immediately, not a single tremble the whole way home. Slept like a champ through the night with no whining. Beautiful, healthy, and well-adjusted puppy! Highly recommend!
